Sustainability
Sulfur is an industrial byproduct – no harmful mining required. This drives material cost down to 0.20 EUR/kg (compared to state of the art cathode material NMC811 at >20.00 EUR/kg).
Todays battery factories require lots of energy. theion aims to save 90 % of energy at production.
The crystal battery is designed for recyclability and thus easy, safe and cheap to recycle. Sustainability goes hand in hand with affordability.
Product safety – theion’s Crystal Battery chemistry and production processes are designed for non flammability: Thermal runaway is impossible.

For experts: theion Sulfur Crystal Wafer at a glance
We are growing a pure Sulfur wafer by our Direct Crystal Imprinting (DCi) method (no slurry coating, no solvents, no water, no drying) directly from molten Sulfur in a few seconds. Because of the flexibility of the process, we can grow any geometrical shape of wafer, and therefore adapted to the customers product shape, yet we suggest a hexagonal shape for space-efficiency reasons.

We removed nearly all volumetric fluctuation of sulfur at wafer level by a special conversion process. So, our cathode is able to work at low porosity. By adding conductive paths, we use at maximum the active material which is equivalent to a high energy density.
In the voids of our Sulfur wafer operates a proprietary solid-state polymer electrolyte. In our Gen 1 and Gen 2 Crystal cell, we use lithium metal foil as anode. Further anode designs are in our Technology Roadmap (Gen 1 to Gen 4). Our battery technology is compatible with bipolar cell arrangement to maximize energy and power content for such cells.
The cell stack is then assembled into a housing which fits geometrically best the customer’s application to maximize module-pack-system energy content.

Power capability ≈ 12.000 W/kg
Cycle life ≥ 1’000 at 1 C
